Geschichten prägen unser Weltbild, doch lange Zeit wurden sie fast ausschließlich von Männern erzählt. Diese Filme aus weiblicher Perspektive zeigen die Vielfalt menschlicher Erfahrungen, brechen Stereotype auf und schaffen neue Vorbilder. Religiöse Riten und Traditionen werden infrage gestellt, besonders auch in Bezug auf heranwachsende Mädchen. Gleich mehrere Arbeiten zeigen die tragischen Verflechtungen von Brauchtum und Missbrauch. Weiters werden Beziehungsmuster hinsichtlich Genderrollen und Familiengründung kontinuierlich hinterfragt. Frauen sind gravierenden Auswirkungen durch Kriege ausgesetzt, dennoch beweisen sie eindrucksvollen Mut und verdienen besondere, nicht nur cineastische Aufmerksamkeit.
Stories shape our view of the world, but for a long time it was almost exclusively men who told them. These films from a female perspective show the diversity of human experiences, break down stereotypes and create new role models. Religious rites and traditions are questioned, especially in relation to adolescent girls. Several works show the tragic intertwining of customs and abuse. Furthermore, relationship patterns with regard to gender roles and starting a family are continuously questioned. Women are exposed to the serious effects of war, yet they demonstrate impressive courage and deserve special, and not just cinematic, attention.

Migration führt immer zu persönlichen und gesellschaftlichen Prozessen, die das Leben sowohl der Ankommenden, als auch der bereits dort Lebenden beeinflussen. Etliche in die USA immigrierte Jüdinnen und Juden der ersten und zweiten Generation hatten sich an die Kultur ihrer neuen Heimat angepasst, zugleich aber den „American way of life“ mitgeprägt. Das Lebensgefühl israelischer Ex-Sowjets oszilliert zwischen Assimilation und sentimentalen Erinnerungen. Und ein Eritreer wird in Israel vom ungewollten Flüchtling plötzlich zum Star. Migration ist also mehr als ein Ortswechsel, sie verändert Identitäten und führt – zumindest im Film – gelegentlich auch zu amüsanten Situationen.
Migration always leads to personal and social processes that influence the lives of both those arriving and those already living there. Many first- and second-generation Jews who immigrated to the USA had adapted to the culture of their new homeland, but at the same time helped to shape the “American way of life”. The attitude to life of Israeli ex-Soviets oscillates between assimilation and sentimental memories. And an Eritrean suddenly goes from being an unwanted refugee to a star in Israel. Migration is therefore more than just a change of location, it changes identities and - at least in the film - occasionally leads to amusing situations.

Im Gedenkjahr zum 80. Jahrestag der Befreiung der KZs wird der unzähligen Opfer gedacht, auch jener, die sich gegen Unterdrückung, Bedrohung und Gewalt wehrten. Europaweit gab es jüdischen Widerstand, der jedoch bis heute eher wenig beachtet wird. Auch kaum bekannt sind beispielsweise die Hilfsaktionen in der französischen Stadt Lille: Mehr als vierzig jüdische Kinder wurden durch Einwohner:innen vor der drohenden Deportation und dem sicheren Tod gerettet. Zivilcourage hört nie auf, wichtig zu sein, etwa beim aktiven Widerstand gegen Antisemitismus und Rechtsradikalismus. – Ein Appell, Verantwortung zu übernehmen und entschieden gegen Hass aufzutreten.
In the commemorative year marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camps, not only the countless victims are remembered, but also those who resisted oppression, threats and violence. Throughout Europe there was Jewish
resistance, but this has received little attention to this day. The relief efforts in the French city of Lille, for example, are also little known: more than forty Jewish children were saved from imminent deportation and certain death by local residents. Civil courage never ceases to be important, for example in active resistance against anti-Semitism and right-wing radicalism - an appeal to take responsibility and take a firm stand against hatred.

Religiöse Gesetze können einerseits stärken und verbinden, andererseits zu fundamentalistischen Vorschriften werden. Das Judentum zeichnet sich unter anderem dadurch aus, dass selbstironische und kritische Blicke auf eigene Traditionen möglich sind, auch im Film. So schafft es ein Bub in einem der Kurzfilme, die Sabbatruhe aufzumischen, ein anderes Mal geht es um amüsante Ehepartner- Suchen; dann wieder um heimliche Kartenspiele von Ultraorthodoxen oder das Unbehagen einer säkularen Familie vor der Beschneidung des Sohnes. Ganz anders, wenn sich Theologisches und Privates vermengen, Menschen aus rigid-religiösen Zwängen auszubrechen versuchen oder es gar zu Übergriffen innerhalb chassidischer Sekten kommt.
Religious laws can strengthen and unite, but can also become fundamentalist regulations. Judaism is characterized, among other things, by the fact that self-ironic and critical views of its own traditions are possible, even in films. For example, a boy in one of the short films manages to stir up the Sabbath rest, another time it is about amusing spouse searches; then again about secret card games of the ultra-orthodox or the unease of a secular family before the circumcision of their son. It's a completely different story when the theological and the private intermingle, when people try to break out of rigid religious constraints or when there are even assaults within Hasidic sects.

Die liebe Familie als Quelle der Freude und des Zorns – dieses Thema ist weltweit universell, wobei auch freundschaftliche Bindungen familiären Charakter haben können. Das Zusammentreffen von Verwandten oder Jugendfreund:innen und die Konfrontation mit der Vergangenheit führen mitunter zu überwältigenden Gefühlen und neuen Konflikten, die den Zusammenhalt der Gruppe gefährden. Kriegstraumata können weitergegeben werden, Verdrängtes und Verschwiegenes ans Tageslicht kommen – mit weitreichenden, jedoch nicht immer negativen Folgen. Und auch, wenn Streit oder divergierende Ansichten Menschen entzweien – es bedeutet nicht, dass Versöhnung unmöglich ist.
The dear family as a source of joy and anger - this theme is universal throughout the world, whereby friendly ties can also have a familial character. The reunion of relatives or childhood friends and the confrontation with the past can sometimes lead to overwhelming feelings and new conflicts that jeopardize the cohesion of the group. War traumas can be passed on, repressed and concealed issues can come to light - with far-reaching, but not always negative consequences. And even if disputes or divergent views divide people, it does not mean that reconciliation is impossible.

Egal ob es um das Aufzeigen von Diskriminierungen und sozialen Ungerechtigkeiten geht, um die brutalen Angriffe auf das Land und die oft drastischen militärischen Antworten darauf - dass das in israelischen Filmen thematisiert werden kann beweist, dass die Demokratie in dem Staat immer noch stabil ist. Dazu kommt: Das israelische Filmschaffen ist vielfältig wie das Land selbst. Was es für junge Menschen heißt, in den Krieg geschickt zu werden, ist ebenso Filmstoff wie es Friedensaktivitäten, Paarkonflikte und Liebesabenteuer sind. Und natürlich darf das Publikum mitunter auf eine komödiantische Verbrecherjagd mitgenommen werden.
Whether it is about showing discrimination and social injustice, the brutal attacks on the country and the often drastic military responses to them - the fact that this can be addressed in Israeli films proves that democracy in the state is still stable. What's more, Israeli filmmaking is as diverse as the country itself. What it means for young people to be sent to war is just as much film material as peace activities, couple conflicts and love adventures. And, of course, the audience is sometimes taken on a comedic manhunt.

Filmbiographien erzählen von Menschen, gleichzeitig von der Zeit und der Gesellschaft um sie herum. Hier geht es um innovative, jüdische Persönlichkeiten, wie den offen queer lebenden, rebellischen Rabbiner, der eine Synagoge für alle gründete. Mitreißend ist auch die Geschichte rund um den Entdecker und Manager der Beatles, dem diese ihre Weltkarriere verdanken. Ein weiterer Blick zurück in die 60er- bis 80er-Jahre zeigt das Wirken eines außergewöhnlichen israelischen Filmemachers, der die Branche revolutionierte. Spannend auch, wie bahnbrechende Personen über die Jahre hinweg anders wahrgenommen werden. So gibt es selbst an Sigmund Freud und seinen Werken immer wieder Neues zu entdecken.

This is about innovative Jewish personalities, such as the openly queer, rebellious rabbi who founded a synagogue for everyone. The story of the Beatles' discoverer and manager, to whom they owe their global career, is also captivating. Another look back at the 1960s to 1980s shows the work of an extraordinary Israeli filmmaker who revolutionized the industry. It is also fascinating to see how groundbreaking people are perceived differently over the years. There is always something new to discover about Sigmund Freud and his works.

Der Krieg als Grundrauschen: Erinnerungspolitik, Traumata und die Ästhetik der Ausweglosigkeit.
In Gesellschaften, in denen Krieg nicht als historische Episode, sondern als permanenter Zustand existiert, verlagert sich die Wahrnehmung von Ausnahme und Normalität. In Israel ist die Präsenz des Krieges allgegenwärtig, der Konflikt strukturiert Biografien, prägt das kollektive Bewusstsein und hinterlässt Spuren – psychologisch, soziokulturell, filmisch.
Die Filme dieses Programms loten Narrative eines festgefahrenen Status quo aus: Sie sezieren Mechanismen der Erinnerung, brechen mit heroischen Erzählungen und richten den Blick auf das Unsagbare – auf die Nachbeben eines Krieges, der nie wirklich aufhört. Traumata sedimentieren sich über Generationen hinweg, Friedensbestrebungen kollidieren mit politischer Realität, und Bilder, die sich ins kollektive Gedächtnis eingebrannt haben, werden filmisch dekonstruiert.
Doch jenseits der Analyse bleibt eine bohrende Leerstelle: Gibt es ein Leben außerhalb des Konflikts? Oder ist der Krieg längst mehr als eine Realität – nämlich eine Idee, die sich selbst fortschreibt? Die Filme in MEMORY OF WAR erzählen nicht von Lösungen, sondern von der Beklemmung, die entsteht, wenn das Unvorstellbare längst zur Struktur des Alltags geworden ist.
The war as background noise: Memory politics, trauma and the aesthetics of hopelessness.
In societies in which war exists not as a historical episode but as a permanent state, the perception of exception and normality shifts. In Israel, the presence of war is omnipresent, the conflict structures biographies, shapes the collective consciousness and leaves its mark - psychologically, socio-culturally, cinematically.
The films in this program explore narratives of an entrenched status quo: They dissect mechanisms of memory, break with heroic narratives and focus on the unspeakable - on the aftershocks of a war that never really ends. Traumas sediment over generations, peace efforts collide with political reality, and images that have burned themselves into the collective memory are deconstructed on film.
But beyond the analysis, there is still a nagging question: is there life outside the conflict? Or has war long been more than a reality - namely an idea that perpetuates itself? The films in MEMORY OF WAR are not about solutions, but about the anxiety that arises when the unimaginable has long since become part of everyday life.
